Question: What is PMS?
Answer: PMS (or Premenstrual Syndrome) is a disorder brought on by hormonal changes that trigger physical and emotional symptoms in a large number of women for up to two weeks prior to menstruation.
Often symptoms recede with menstruation and women remain symptom-free until about two weeks before their next period. The time period between ovulation and menses is when women experience the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome.
Question: What are the typical symptoms of PMS?
Answer: Don't feel alone if you have suffered from one or more of the 150 physical and emotional symptoms that have been attributed to PMS. Complaints can include: feeling "out-of-control", anxious, depressed and having unusual crying spells, panic attacks, tension, being overly emotional about things, headaches, fluid retention, constipation, painful joints, backache, abdominal cramping, heart palpitations, weight gain and tiredness. Symptoms can be different from month to month and there might even be symptom-free months. Women usually don't have all of the PMS symptoms at one time. Sometimes in severe cases decreased work or social performance and altered libido are also exhibited.
Question: How is PMS treated?
Answer: Since the 1930's treatments have included psychotropic drugs for the emotional ramifications and medical treatments have included progesterone suppositories, low-dose danazol which can be taken all month long to prevent the rise and fall of estrogen levels. Another drug called leuprolide acetate, which is normally used for symptoms of endometriosis, can quickly eliminate PMS symptoms.
The problem with some of these treatments with man-made drugs are the side effects.

The side effects of danazol can even mimic PMS symptoms.
The side effects of leuprolide acetate also can mimic PMS as well as causing bone density loss. Click here for more information on leuprolide acetate.
Herbs, Vitamins and Supplements for PMS
Most women experience physical and emotional changes each month before menses. For some women, however, these changes are exaggerated and they desire some kind of remediation.
Some practitioners believe that an excess of the hormone estrogen and a deficiency of the hormone progesterone may be the cause of many cases of PMS. Effecting a balance of these hormones can return the body to levels that create harmony. Some women choose to use a natural hormonal treatment with herbal and organic supplements such as (Kyolic, Life Flo, Natra Bio, Natures herbs) which can be very effective.
